Perhaps one of the biggest debates when it comes to choosing a computer for photo editing is whether or not to go with a Mac or a PC. The bottom line for this debate is that both can work fine for your photo editing needs. However, if you are going to get the hardware that you need you are going to have to be willing to spend the money.
When it comes down to comparing the PC to the Mac, hands down the Mac is the best choice. This article is mostly for PC users who are thinking about switching to a Mac because it is unlikely that a current Mac user is thinking about switching back to a PC, especially if you are a photographer.
As a PC user you are likely curious about how much better a Mac is. If it is time to invest in a new computer, you may be thinking about switching. However, if you are currently working on a PC and things are going well editing your photos, you might just want to stick with what you know.
There is little reason to put a kink in your workflow by going away from what you are familiar with. Instead of switching platforms for editing, consider investing in new lenses, other new equipment, and training as this will improve your photography more than switching to a Mac for editing.
There is no question that at some point in your photography career you are going to want to invest in a better computer than the one you had when you first started. Lightroom, Photoshop, and other photo processing tools will just run a lot better when you have a quality computer. While you can make due for a while with a cheaper computer, when processing photos is taking twice as long as normal because you are waiting for your computer constantly, or if your display is not good enough, it is time to do something about it.
Once you have made the decision to purchase a new laptop for photo editing you should consider it the same as investing in a new lens or other type of equipment and be prepared to spend a decent amount of money in order to get a laptop that is going to make the editing process much simpler.
Does Adobe Run Better on Mac?
When it comes down to it, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom run about the same on both the Mac and a PC. Yes, I said it. These 2 photo editing programs are some of the best and both run exceptionally well on both. While some may argue that there is a difference, the average person will not notice much of a difference when it comes to how the programs run.
With that being said, there is going to be a difference in running Photoshop on a $200 laptop when compared to a Mac, but if a photographer spends some money on a good quality laptop, the differences are minimal.
Don’t Macs have Fewer Issues?
When it comes down to it, this is one area where Macs do have an edge over PCs. Mac computers seem to run into fewer issues than PCs. However, PCs can also work without any problems and there are times when Macs do have issues.
When it comes down to the Mac vs. PC argument for photo editing, there are definitely pros and cons to using each. The Macs come at a higher price, but you really get what you pay for. If you want a quality PC for photo editing you are going to need to pay for a more expensive laptop in order to get the memory and other features that you need in order to easily edit photos.
